Families are Essential (FAE) will be protesting on August 29, the opening day of the U.S. Open in Flushing, NY because current U.S. travel mandates will keep one of the world’s top players from competing.
As of today, Novak Djokovic, winner of the singles championship at London’s Wimbledon championship last month, is barred from entering the United States because of the American vaccine requirement.
FAE urges the federal government to immediately end all travel mandates and allow Djokovic and millions of separated loved ones and others to freely enter the United States. The group believes it is shameful and embarrassing that Djokovic is barred from the country and the competition especially considering he just won Wimbledon in the U.K., one of America’s closest allies.
Eighty-three countries have ended ALL border mandates but both the U.S and Canada still maintain rules that keep families apart, sharply reduce border crossings, dramatically cut tourism, and make normal cross border life impossible. Countries that have ended all travel mandates include the United Kingdom, the vast majority of European countries, Australia, as well as many other countries worldwide.
“At this point we in the United States need to join the rest of the world and end the mandates,” explained Marcella Picone, one of the group leaders. “The CDC has essentially advised a return to pre pandemic life and the current border restrictions are indefensible and harming the lives of New Yorkers, our economy and our normal way of life.”

“It is so hypocritical of President Biden to impose stringent rules affecting Djokovic and others while more than millions of undocumented have just walked across the southern border since the beginning of the pandemic with no vaccine checks,” said Picone. “We just want the same rules governing the Southern border at the Northern Border, so our families can finally reunite.
The group will join Children’s Health Defense, Teachers for Choice and other groups protesting mandates on Monday.
FAE is a binational group of families that have been separated by Canadian and American border mandates since March 2020. The group’s goal is an immediate return to pre pandemic border policies.
